NGOs should emulate Abim in championing youth: Syed Saddiq

NILAI: Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) for youth in the country are encouraged to amplify their efforts to empower Malaysia’s young.

Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said it is crucial for such NGOs to position themselves as a single body which fights for the welfare of the younger generation.

“Politicians come and go. But a strong organisation that stays true to its purpose will always be around, regardless of changes in the political landscape,” he said.

Syed Saddiq said the Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (Abim) has set a good example on how an organisation should serve the community.

“The organisation has been around for 47 years. It remains relevant to the youth and continued to develop over the years.

“(It) is also unique due to its moderate Islamic movement, which is accepted by people from all walks of life, regardless of their backgrounds and religions. This reflects the good image of Islam,” he added.

Syed Saddiq said the ministry will extend contributions to Abim following the five-star rating it awarded the organisation recently.

“As a minister, I am responsible to provide whatever assistance they need, and at the same time, ensure that the organisation can continue to be an example to other youth NGOs,” he said when met after the Relawan Malaysia Dinner held at University Sains Islam Malaysia here, on Saturday night.

Syed Saddiq also expressed hopes that the country’s youth organisations would continue to be the voice of youth to ensure the country’s bright future.
