Jho Low's St Kitts and Nevis passport deactivated, never entered the island country

KUALA LUMPUR: Fugitive financier Low Taek Jho's St Kitts and Nevis' passport was deactivated by the country in June this year.

In a news report by the St Kitts and Nevis Observer, the administration of the country under Prime Minister Timothy Harris deactivated Low or Jho Low's passport through Interpol.

This came following Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's announcement in early June that Jho Low was a wanted man.

Interestingly, while Jho Low was in the possession of a St Kitts and Nevis passport for several years, there has never been a record of him entering the country.

"Immigration records indicate that Jho Low has never entered any port in St. Kitts and Nevis," the report said.

According to the report, Jho Low became an 'economic citizen' of the island country in 2011, during the administration of the St Kitts and Nevis' longest serving Prime Minister Denzil Douglas.

Last week, Jho Low and two others were indicted by the United States Department of Justice (DoJ).

Jho Low and another individual, Roger Ng were charged in the federal court in the Eastern District of New York with conspiring to launder billions of dollars embezzled from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), among others.

Meanwhile, Tim Leissner, former Goldman Sachs Southeast Asia chairman and participating managing director, pleaded guilty to conspiring to launder money and conspiring to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) by both paying bribes to various Malaysian and Abu Dhabi officials and circumventing the internal accounting controls of the Financial Institution while he was employed by it.

The Penang-born Jho Low however maintained his innocence following his indictment done in absentia.
