Students adamant on sitting for SPM despite being hospitalised

IPOH: For Muhammad Syazwan Salleh, being hospitalised isn’t a good enough excuse for him to miss the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination.

The 17-year-old, a student of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tasek Damai, has been warded at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) after fainting at his home in Klebang Restu on Tuesday.

Muhammad Syazwan, who is suffering from an infection, however is adamant that he would not let his illness prevent him from sitting for the exam.

He said he had been feeling weak since last month and had been missing classes.

“I feel weak and I couldn’t do much revision for the subjects but managed to do a bit of studying. I may be sick but I will sit for this examination,” said the teen, who wants to be an engineer.

He said his classmates would come to his house to share their notes to help him catch up with lessons in school.

He said he was touched by the show of support from his friends and teachers, who have been checking in on him via WhatsApp.

Muhammad Syazwan sat for the first SPM paper on Tuesday at a special room at the hospital. He was joined by Way Shuet Yee, 18, who also had to sit for the exam in the hospital following a stomach surgery.

Two other students also sat for the SPM exam in the same hospital, while two other candidates are taking the examination at the Taiping Hospital.

A total of 36,072 candidates, including 111 disabled students, sat for SPM examination at 325 centres in the Perak on Tuesday. The exams will run until December 13.
