Support for Zahid depends on consensus decision by other Umno MPs, says Khairy

KUALA LUMPUR: Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin said his support for Zahid depends on consensus decision by fellow Umno MPs.

While denying any involvement or knowledge on an alleged plan to remove Zahid from party leadership, Khairy said any decisions on the matter would likely be made after the parliamentary sitting.

“We have to see what the consensus is among the MPs. We have to think about the future of the party properly in great depth. “I don’t think we can resolve this in a Press conference or by commenting on a news report which I am not aware of,” Khairy said when met at the parliament lobby today.

Khairy was commenting on a report by the New Straits Times which quoted Umno sources, claiming that terms had been outlined by senior party leaders to remove or “divorce” Zahid from the leadership this month.

“I didn’t know that we were married to him. I don’t know anything. If there are such attempts (to remove Zahid), I’m not involved in anything,” Khairy said.

When met earlier, Zahid refused to comment on any other issue save for the continuation of Datuk C. Sivarraajh in the Dewan Rakyat as Cameron Highlands MP.

Khairy however admitted that he heard several “invitations” by Umno MPs for “informal discussions” at the end of the ongoing parliamentary sitting.

“I am not sure if the invitations have anything to do with the issue (of removing Zahid) or not. I am not informed on the matter. But the message (invitation) said that (MPs) should get together, to talk about some of the current issues and such.”

When asked, Khairy however did not agree with removing Zahid from the party.

“As for now, I don’t have to make any stand as we are still in the parliamentary session. Maybe, after the sitting, there may be discussions (on Zahid). But as of now, I have not heard anything about it.”
