Civil servants working in Komtar shocked building has no FC

GEORGE TOWN: Many of the civil servants working in Komtar have no idea that the state’s tallest building does not have a Fire Certificate (FC).

Imran Hilmy, the special officer to state Health Committee chairman, said he was shocked to learn about the matter through an exclusive report in the NSTP today.

He said the management of Komtar was now under PDC Setia Urus (PDCSU), and as such, the state government should formulate an action plan to address the matter.

“I am indeed shocked that Komtar has failed to obtain the FC, more so, after reading it from the newspapers.

“This is worrying, especially if something untoward happens within the building, as many civil servants work here and members of the public visit here daily.

“This situation puts the life of all at risk, and it is dangerous,” he said.

The NSTP, in its report today, revealed that 27 premises of different types in the state had failed to obtain the FC from the Fire and Rescue Department as they failed to meet the building safety specifications, thereby putting people at risk.

These buildings included Komtar, the state administrative building and Penang Hospital, both located in Georgetown.

Hermy Izwan Saidin, another special officer to the same state executive councillor, said it was worthwhile to take insurance coverage after knowing the truth.

“Thankfully I have personal insurance coverage, especially if anything happens.

“However, I hope this issue can be addressed promptly as it can affect the state,” he said.

Zyen Faiezane, special officer to state Public Works Committee chairman, said she hoped the safety of all civil servants and visitors to Komtar could be guaranteed, although the building has no FC.

“I am worried if a fire or accident breaks out in Komtar. This issue can just be swept under the carpet. Something needs to be done,” she said.
