Special meeting to elect new Agong underway

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sultan of Terengganu Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin is chairing the special meeting of the Conference of Rulers today to elect the 16th Yang Di-Pertuan Agong and his deputy.

Bernama reported this while saying that the special meeting began at 11.15am.

All nine Malay rulers were in attendance except for Kelantan's Sultan Muhammad V, who stepped down as Yang Di-Pertuan Agong on Jan 6.

Earlier, the rulers were seen arriving in their respective motorcades at Istana Negara main gate at 10am here.

The installation of the 16th Yang Di-Pertuan Agong was mooted after Sultan Muhammad V stepped down from the throne.

Today's special meeting will decide on who would ascend the throne as Yang Di-Pertuan Agong for a five-year term in line with Malaysia’s constitutional monarchy.

The Deputy Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizuddin Shah is currently carrying out duties of the Agong.
