School guard 'battles' macaque, lands in hospital with injuries

DUNGUN: A security guard ended up with five stitches on his head and injuries to his leg after he was attacked by a pig-tailed macaque or beruk that suddenly went berserk at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Durian Mentangau, here, last night.

Norhisham Mohamed Nor, 40, said he was on duty when the animal suddently approached him.

In the 8pm incident, Norhisham said he was taking a short break at the guard post while waiting to perform Isya' prayers.

Suddenly he felt ticklish and realised the animal had brushed up against him.

"At first I thought it was a dog but when I got up, I saw it was a macaque and it then attacked me.

"The animal bit my right foot causing me to fall and my head ended up hitting the steel barrier at the guard post.

"After about five minutes of being in 'battle' to free myself, I finally got hold of a steel bar and swung it in the macaque's direction to scare it off," he said when met at the Dungun Hospital where he is being treated following the incident, today.

Norhisham said after the macaque went away, he called his wife, Norhayati Ali, 41, for help.

His wife came to the school and rushed Norhisham to the hospital.

According to Norhayati, the macaque was said to have attacked several villagers since yesterday evening.

"Out of fear for their safety, some villagers made the decision to shoot the macaque at about 9pm yesterday," she said.
