Four-year-old attacked by short-tailed macaque in Gua Musang

KOTA BARU: The State Wildlife Department today confirmed that it has received a report on a four-year-old boy who was attacked by a short-tailed macaque.

State Wildlife Department director Mohamad Hafid Rohani said the report was lodged by the boy's family yesterday.

Following the report, he said the department has set up traps to catch the macaque.

It is learnt that the incident happened on Monday at Kampung Meranto in Gua Musang.

Mohamad Alif Zahiruddin was riding his bicycle about 20 metres from his home when he was attacked by the male macaque.

According to his father, Mohamad Zainuddin Yusuf, his son was at home with his 28-year-old wife when the incident happened at about noon.

"According to my wife, she heard Alif, the eldest of three siblings, crying outside the home and immediately rushed out to check on him.

"My wife saw our son bleeding on his hand and some part of his body when she arrived there.

"She then rushed him to Gua Musang hospital," said the 30-year-old when contacted.

Zainuddin said her son was later transferred to Sultan Ismail Petra in Kuala Krai.

"He was warded in Kuala Krai for two days due to the injuries," he said.

He hoped the wildlife department would take immediate action to prevent a repeat incident to others.

"Many villagers have realised that there are a lot of short-tailed macaques in the area but the animals do not attack humans.

"When this incident happened, they started to worry and fear allowing their children to play outside their homes," he added.
