Toll abolishment still a work in progress, says Guan Eng

KUALA LUMPUR: Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng today said the government is working progressively towards abolishing tolls in the country but needed time to realise them.

"Why are we talking about this? We (the government) are saying (that) we are working progressively, but it will take time.

"Let's wait for the announcement. I am sure there will be clarity when the announcement is made," he said.

"But until then, please don't speculate... please don't speculate." he added.

Lim was asked to comment on a statement by Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who said the government might make an announcement regarding toll in a “couple of days.”

Muhyiddin, who is also Pakatan Harapan deputy president, reportedly said this in his speech at a PH event in Kampung Batu 26, Beranang last night.

Lim went on to say that the PH government remained committed in fulfilling its election promises.

“That is our commitment and we will carry it out according to the government’s financial capabilities. This matter involves an issue of cost... but we will continue to work on it in order to fulfil the promises,” Lim said.

Lim had earlier witnessed the signing ceremony for the novation agreement between Prasarana, MRCB George Kent Sdn Bhd (MRCBGK) and nine work package contractors (WCPs), in pursuant to the Fixed Price Contract (FPC) at the Prasarana Berhad office here today.

The novation agreement will allow the WPCs to migrate from the previous Project Delivery Partner (PDP) regime to the current FPC regime where MRCBGK is now the turnkey contractor while Prasarana takes the role as employer for the project.

The FPC for LRT3 was drawn up in line with instruction by the MoF on July 12 last year to reduce the project cost to RM16.63 billion.
