'Energy saving device' doesn't work, says commission

PUTRAJAYA: A widely sold energy saving device that is claimed to be able to cut electricity bills by 30 per cent doesn’t work.

The Energy Commission (ST) today said it and other bodies had tested the device and found it to be ineffective.

“The study showed that the meter reading doesn’t show much difference,” the statement read.

“There is no evidence from any authority that the device saves electricity.”

ST said consumers could be fooled because the current flow is shown to be lower when the device is installed.

However, the total power use recorded is the same as before.

The commission slammed irresponsible people who have been using the ST logo to promote the device.

“ST would like to affirm that it has never approved any electricity saving products and action will be taken those who use the ST logo to promote their products.”

ST urged the public to lodge reports if they found anyone misusing its logo.

The commission said the public could cut their electricity bills by using electrical appliances with energy efficiency labels and switching off electrical appliances that were not in use.

“They can also set their air conditioning at 24°C and rely on natural lighting to save electricity.”
