Man killed, fiancee seriously hurt in Kota Baru crash

KOTA BARU: A man, in his 20s, was killed while his fiancee seriously injured when the car they were travelling in slammed into the pillar of an elevated highway near Sultan Yahya Petra Bridge, here, Thursday evening.

In the 7pm incident, the man, who was pinned inside the Perodua MyVi, died on the spot while his fiancee sustained serious head and body injuries.

Firemen at the scene took nearly 20 minutes to extricate the victim's body out of the car.

A witness, Anis Hafiza Awang, 22, said she was on the way to work when she saw the crash.

“Then, I saw a hand jutting out of the front passenger side of the car, as if waving for help. Without hesitation, I stopped my motorcycle and with the help of other passers-by, pulled her out of the badly-damaged vehicle."

"I held here on my lap while waiting for the ambulance. We could not pulled the driver out as he was pinned and had to wait for the firemen to arrive." she said.

As the man's body was taken out of the car, a woman, believed to be the victim's mother, was spotted running towards the rescuers, crying. She was later consoled by relatives and friends, who were also at the area.

The victim's body was taken to the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital for post mortem. The man's fiancee was also taken to the same hospital for treatment.

Darul Naim Fire and Rescue Department chief Mohd Ridzuan Ali said the department was alerted of the incident at 7.08pm and arrived at the scene five minutes later.
