Malaysian found dead at Hyde park lake a PSD-sponsored student

PUTRAJAYA: The Public Service Department (PSD) today confirmed that Muhammad Hafiz Zainal who had died at Hyde park, London, yesterday, was a PSD-sponsored student.

In a statement earlier, it said Hafiz was studying Chemistry at Imperial College London.

“We have already contacted and visited the family of Muhammad Hafiz.

“We have also arranged for the family to leave for London tomorrow as scheduled,” the department said.

PSD’s Overseas Training and Education Advisory Office in London will assist the family with the help of the Malaysian High Commission.

“We urge Malaysians to pray for Muhammad Hafiz and his family. Al-Fatihah,” the department said.

The 24-year-old undergraduate was found dead at Serpentine Lake, Hyde Park, London, yesterday.

Hafiz‘s father veteran journalist Zainal Epi said he did not know what had led to the death of the youngest of his three children.

“I received a call from the Malaysian Embassy in London about 2.30am and was told that the confirmation was made based on the identification found on the body.”

Zainal said he would leave for London tomorrow with his wife and two children to bring Hafiz’s body home.

“PSD is making arrangements for us, once we reach London,” he added.

According to a police spokesman, the body of the third year student was recovered from the lake.

The death has been classified as unexplained. The investigation is ongoing.
