BN praises Dr M for withdrawing from Rome Statute

SEREMBAN: Barisan Nasional (BN) has praised Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for withdrawing Malaysia from the Rome Statute of International Criminal Court (ICC).

The coalition’s deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said that the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government's decision to listen to the grouses of the people on the matter was a wise idea.

"The people are uncomfortable (about the Rome Statute), especially when the government signed it without considering their opinions and grouses. This has sparked anger among them.

"The ICC can reduce and destroy the sovereignty of the country, as one party has the absolute power to take any action.

"Even the United States of America has not signed the ICC – so why must we do it? What's important is to protect the country's rights," he said.

Mohamad said this at a press conference held at BN’s command centre here, today.

The withdrawal was announced by Dr Mahathir after the decision was made at Friday's Cabinet meeting.
