KUALA LUMPUR: The biometric fingerprint screening system for foreign workers, aimed at overcoming issues of identity theft, is expected to be rolled out by end of the year, the Foreign Workers Medical Examination Monitoring Agency (Fomema) said.
Its chief executive officer and president Datuk Mohd Hatar Ismail, in a Bernama interview last night, said the system was an improvement to the existing foreign worker recognition process which is based on facial recognition via the passport.
The biometric system, he pointed out, would assist more than 2,000 participating panel clinics and X-ray centres in the country to ensure that impostors would not be able to “beat the system”.
Mohd Hatar said some of the Fomema panel clinics were currently in the process of upgrading their computer systems to adapt to the biometric system.
“There are several stages to the system and everything is proceeding smoothly. It is just that we need a complete data to be upgraded in the immigration system.
"Insya-Allah (God willing) we expect to go ‘live’ by the end of this year.” he said in the interview with Bernama News Channel at Wisma Bernama.
Fomema is the sole agency authorised by the government to manage, monitor and supervise mandatory health screening programme for foreign workers in the country. -– BERNAMA
