Downpour causes flash floods in Genting Highlands

BENTONG: Heavy rain lasting over two hours at Genting Highlands on Sunday afternoon triggered flash floods and mud flow on the road outside the Genting Premium Outlets (GPO).

The incident left some visitors and motorists stranded as water inundated certain parts of the stretch of road surrounding the outlets and the resort area.

A Genting Highlands Fire and Rescue department spokesman said heavy rain which began about 2pm had caused the flash floods some two hours later.

He said flood waters receded by about 6pm and the department did not receive any report of any untoward incident.

Checks revealed that the monsoon drain near a hill slope could not accommodate the heavy volume of water resulting in the mud water gushing from the hill to spilling onto the roads and nearby areas.

The Awana Skyway temporarily ceased operations until flood waters receded.

Videos and images of the incident showed muddy water rushing down the road went viral on social media platforms.

A major traffic congestion was reported at several roads leading to the resort as some motorists had to stop their vehicles and wait for the water to recede.
