Two Sabah Railway coaches destroyed in blaze

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Railway Department lost two main coaches in a fire last night.

In the 7pm incident, the two assets were said to be undergoing maintenance at the department’s workshop.

State Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson Agustavia Joe Guasi said they received a call at 7.59pm.

He said nine firemen were dispatched to put out the blaze.

“The team had to travel for about 21km to reach the area. Upon arrival, they had to control the huge fire from spreading to other parts of the workshop,” he said in a statement.

The flames were extinguished within 30 minutes.

No injuries or deaths were reported.

The department's forensics team is still investigating the cause and total loss incurred in the incident.

“The main coaches are identified as Rail Car 2102 which is fully burnt, the other one is Hitachi with 30 per cent burn,” he added.
