Miri free from 'Ghost Smoke'

MIRI: District Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry will remain vigilant despite not finding any trace of 'Ghost Smoke' candy on sale in the northern part of Sarawak.

Its Miri chief Joe Azmi Jamil said the ministry has yet to receive any reports and complaints with regards to the sale of the candy.

He said after news broke out in Sabah on children caught smoking the candy, enforcement personnel were deployed to conduct checks on several shops in Permyjaya and nearby locations since yesterday.

"So far, no supermarkets or sundry shops have been found selling the candy but we will continue to monitor the situation closely.

"We also urged business owners not to sell the candy, otherwise, stern action will be taken against them," he said.

Member of the public, particular parents, he said, had raised concerns over the sale of the candy, known to emit smokes, similar to inhaling cigarettes.

"The issue went viral in social media and we call upon residents to lodge a report if they see anyone selling the candy," he added.

The matter came to light when a teacher in Papar, Sabah posted a video on Facebook showing three kids mimicking the act of smoking using a packet of vape-like candy.

Following that the Health Ministry has initiated an investigation to look into the sale of the 'Ghost Smoke' candy nationwide.
