Free bus services to meet Miri traffic needs

MIRI: The Sarawak government has green-lighted free bus services in Miri city.

This initiative is set to benefit both residents and tourists by easing traffic congestion and promoting economic growth, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

Sarawak's Transport Minister Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin announced the plan, highlighting its dual purpose of reducing traffic snarls and supporting the economically disadvantaged.

The introduction of new buses is planned to replace the existing 14 outdated ones within the city later this year.

"By providing free bus services, we aim to reduce traffic congestion, alleviate the burden on the less fortunate, and also boost tourism in Miri," Lee said during the 2024 Annual General Meeting of the Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI).

The initiative is not only a step towards modernising the city's public transport system but also aligns with broader objectives of sustainable development and technological advancement in Sarawak.

Lee urged local business communities to embrace new technologies, particularly in the emerging hydrogen economy, to stay in step with global trends and contribute to Sarawak's vision of a green economy.

Sarawak's push towards a green economy and sustainable practices is recognised at the national level, with the state leading in clean energy resources and hydrogen economy development.

"The Sarawak government is committed to utilising clean energy resources, ensuring environmental sustainability, and transitioning to a hydrogen economy," Lee added.

The announcement was made in the presence of key figures including Sarawak Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, Miri Mayor and Pujut assemblyman Adam Yii Siew Sang, and MCCCI chairman Ling Chiong Sing.
