Three killed, 12 – mostly children – injured in Gua Musang crash

GUA MUSANG: Three people were killed and 12 injured when a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and a van – each carrying a family – collided at KM15 of the Gua Musang-Kuala Lipis highway here, early today (Aug 16).

The dead were Toyota Avanza driver Che Azmi Che Hamzah, 48, and his wife, Nor Hayati Mohamad, 43, from Taman Mesra, here; and the driver of a Toyota Hiace, whose identity has not been established.

According to Bernama, the injured were the deceased couple’s three children – Mohamad Faris Faisal, 15, Mohamad Afiz Zulhilmi, 23 and Nur Damia Sofea, 7.

Also injured were passengers of the Hiace – Wan Zakiah Wan Abdul Razak, 39, Khaulah Zulfaizan, 11, Ahmad Zaid Zulfaizan, 1, Siti Fatimah Zulfaizan, 15, Muhammad Saad Zulfaizan, 3, Masyitah Zulfaizan, 14, Wawaddah Zulfaizan, 7, Sakinah Zulfaizan, 5, and Solehah Zulfaizan, 9.

Nor Hayati and the Hiace driver died at the scene, while Che Azmi died as he was receiving treatment at the Gua Musang Hospital (GMH).

The 4.50am accident occurred when the Avanza, which was en route from Kuala Lipis to Gua Musang, suddenly entered the opposite lane at a bend in the road and collided head-on with the Hiace.

“The bodies of the deceased were sent to GMH for post mortems.

“The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” said Gua Musang district police chief Superintendent Mohd Taufik Maidin.
