Transport Ministry to study motorcycle taxi service

SEREMBAN: The Transport Ministry will conduct detailed research and produce a report on a motorcycle e-hailing service within a month.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the study was to provide a new direction or mechanism for the implementation of the new public transport service, which included rules and regulations.

He said he would also look into the security, insurance and cultural issues, as well as the implementation of such a service in other countries.

“We want to give priority to safety features.

“We know many ministers who support this effort as it can prove to be economical, including for small and medium industries, and e-commerce.

“But, for now, we are focusing on the mechanism and when it is ready, we will announce it because we want to ensure the safety in providing such public transport,” he told a press conference after launching the Seremban Parliamentary Level Jalur Gemilang programme at SMK Panchor, here, today.

Loke said the service would complement and not replace other public transport services such as trains or buses.

He said the main problem faced by commuters in Kuala Lumpur was to get public transport to reach the office or home after arriving at bus or train stations.

“Once everything is finalised, we will open the application and any motorcycle taxi service company can register.

“There have been reports that we have approved a request made by Gojek.

“It’s not true. They just came to meet the prime minister a few days ago to submit the proposal and there has been no official request yet,” he said.

Meanwhile, asked about a major system disruption at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) today, he said, the ministry had yet to receive a full report on the matter.

“I am aware of the problem. I apologise for any inconvenience caused and I have requested Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) to provide the latest information on the situation,” he said.

It was reported that the interruption at KLIA had affected several airport systems such as WiFi connectivity, Flight Information Display System (FIDS), check-in counters and the baggage handling system (BHS).

MAHB, in a statement, said the disruption had started last night and the problem is being fixed.
