KLIA operations almost back to normal [NSTTV]

SEPANG: The situation at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), which has been hit by an IT systems disruption since Wednesday, is returning to normal.

As of 9am today (Aug 24), business was proceeding as usual at departure gates and check-in counters at KLIA and klia2.

Checks also showed that KLIA’s WiFi is back online.

Gone were the long queues of passengers who had to endure having their luggage manually checked-in over the last three days, which also saw the delay of dozens of international flights.

At check-in counters on Friday, airport staff were seen conducting check-in procedures manually, using pen and paper.

Almost 1,000 KLIA CARE ambassadors were pressed into service, working around the clock to provide check-in assistance, information and comfort to frustrated passengers.

MAHB and McDonald’s also provided free coffee, tea and buns to passengers as they waited in longs queues.

Following the system outage, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) replaced network equipment which failed on Wednesday night, causing the glitch which affected the Flight Information Display System (FIDS), check-in-counters, the Baggage Handling Systems (BHS), and WiFi availability.

The new equipment is now being tested and closely monitored for stability.

In a statement on Friday, MAHB group chief executive officer Raja Azmi Raja Nazuddin said that since the replacement of the network equipment, there has been progress in network stability.

"Critical systems at KLIA’s main terminal are now mostly up and running," he added.

Despite the return to near-normalcy, passengers are still being advised to arrive four hours before their flights’ departure to avoid possible complications.
