Mat Sabu: Probe into Major Mohd Zahir's death almost complete

KLANG: The investigation into the death of Major Mohd Zahir Armaya, who was killed in a shooting demonstration at the Lok Kawi Camp in Kota Kinabalu on Wednesday, will be wrapped up soon.

Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu said that the probe to ascertain the circumstances that led to the death of the 36-year-old is in its final stages.

“I am sure… it will be concluded soon.

“This was an accident that had never happened before,” he said briefly, declining to elaborate further.

Mohamad added that the ministry will do all it can to assist Mohd Zahir’s widow, Nourshafinar Harun, and three children – a 6-month-old baby with Nourshafinar, and two from Mohd Zahir’s previous marriage.

Mohamad said that the ministry has raised funds which will be handed over to the family soon.

“There are also other forms of assistance that will be provided to them in the near future. We will take care of the family to the best of our ability,” he added.

Mohamad said this after flagging off Soka Gakkai Malaysia’s Run For Peace 2019, which saw the participation of 12,000 people at the Klang Jaya field here, today.

Also present was Soka Gakkai Malaysia’s deputy president Johnny Ng; Sentosa state assemblyman G. Gunarajah; and Klang Selatan police chief Assistant Commissioner Shamsul Amar Ramli.

Mohd Zahir died after he is believed to have been accidentally shot during the launch of the Malaysian Fifth Infantry Division and the 13th Malaysian Infantry Brigade exhibition at the Lok Kawi Camp.

The commander of the Special Operations Group 11 (11 GGK) at the Sungai Udang camp in Melaka died at 9.20am at the Queen Elizabeth 1 Hospital in Kota Kinabalu.

Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Abdul Hamid Bador recently said that a thorough investigation was being carried out on the demonstration exercise’s standard operating procedure to identify the cause of the incident.
