Special cabinet meeting to discuss Shared Prosperity Vision

KUALA LUMPUR: The government’s Shared Prosperity Vision and its long-term impact on the country’s economic direction will be discussed in detail at a special cabinet committee meeting on Sept 14.

The Economic Affairs Ministry, in a statement today, said Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has agreed to the meeting on the Shared Prosperity Vision, which is in line with the government’s aim to restructure the economy and ensure that its development benefits all Malaysians.

The ministry said the vision displays the government’s commitment to restructure the economy and ensure that its continued development continues to benefit all Malaysians.

“The aim of this vision is for all Malaysians to obtain a decent standard of living by the year 2030,” said the ministry.

The Shared Prosperity Vision will encompass the 12th and 13th Malaysia Plans.

The ministry said the annual Budget for the 12th and 13th Malaysia Plans will be planned in line with the Shared Prosperity Vision.

“The 2020 Budget, which will be tabled in October, will be a ‘preparatory budget’ so that all quarters will be ready to proceed when the 12th Malaysia Plan comes into effect in 2021,” it said.

The ministry also noted that the 10 years earmarked to realise the Shared Prosperity Vision requires strategic cooperation involving not just the government, but also all relevant quarters including state governments, local authorities, the private sector and government-linked companies, academics, non-governmental organisations as well as the general public.

“The government is confident that the Shared Prosperity Vision will serve as a new hope and agenda for Malaysia’s future and serve as the basis for national unity.”

The Shared Prosperity Vision was announced by Dr Mahathir at the tabling of the mid-term review of the 11th Malaysia Plan on Oct 2018 in Parliament. Its framework was also explained by the prime minister in his May 9 speech earlier this year in conjunction with Pakatan Harapan’s one year in government.
