One drowns, another saved as clam search goes awry

KEPALA BATAS: It was supposed to be just like any other day for two friends – go to the beach, catch some clams and return home happy.

However, the regular routine turned into a nightmare yesterday when strong current dragged the two friends into deeper waters as they went looking for clams at the Kuala Muda beach in Penaga, here.

Fishermen managed to pull the 13-year-old to safety in the 6pm incident but his 22-year-old friend was sadly swept away in the incident.

The rescued victim was sent to the Kepala Batas Hospital for treatment while a search and rescue (SAR) operation was immediately initiated for missing Mohamed Zulfadhli Mohamed Johari.

This morning, Zulfadhli’s remains were recovered by rescuers.

State Maritime director Captain Maritime Hamizan Harun said that the body was found at about 11.20am.

"The body will be surrendered to the police for the next course of action and post-mortem," he added.
