Man's bomb joke at Miri Airport backfires

MIRI: A man was arrested at the Miri Airport today after he told the AirAsia check-in counter staff that he was carrying a bomb in his luggage.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Lim Meng Seah said the incident happened about 8am as the 28-year-old man was checking in for a flight to Kuala Lumpur.

“He was about to board the plane to Kuala Lumpur... When the airline ground staff asked about the content of his bag, he told them he was bringing a bomb into the plane,” he said.

It is learnt that the check-in counter staff had asked him whether he was carrying any power bank but replied that he had a bomb, and did so three times after being asked to verify the remark.

Lim said following that, the security personnel were called to arrest the man. He was later taken to the airport police station for further questioning.

“We immediately checked his luggage...but no bomb was found.

"He may be joking, but this is a very serious matter,” he added.

The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code criminal intimidation.
