All schools in Penang and Putrajaya to reopen tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR: All 399 schools in Penang and 25 in Putrajaya which were forced to close due to haze last week will be reopened tomorrow.

This was based on the Air Pollutant Index (API) readings recorded at below 200 in both Penang and Putrajaya.

“Any changes and latest information will be informed from time to time,” said Putrajaya Education Department director Farizah Ahmad in a statement today.

Putrajaya recorded an API reading of 164 as of 7pm.

Meanwhile, Penang Education Department deputy director Abdul Rashid Abdul Samad in a statement today reminded schools to follow the standard operating procedure (SOP) as well as to prioritise the health of their students and teachers at all times.

Observations by the Malaysian Air Pollution Index Management System (APIMS) portal showed that readings at four stations in Penang were at an unhealthy level as of 8pm, but the readings were less than 180.

An API reading of between 0 and 50 indicates ‘good’ air quality; 51 and 100 (moderate); 101 and 200 (unhealthy); 201 and 300 (very unhealthy) and 300 and above (hazardous).
