Amok case: Police identify men who uploaded seditious posts

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have identified three men, aged between 35 and 40, who allegedly uploaded sensitive and seditious posts on the social media in connection with the amok case at a factory in Bayan Lepas on Monday.

Federal police Criminal Investigation Department’s Prosecution/Law division (D5) Classified Crime Investigation Unit assistant principal director Senior Assistant Commissioner Mior Farid Al Atrash Wahid said two of them were from Kedah, while the other was from Penang.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 505 of the Penal Code for statements conducing to public mischief and Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998.

"Yesterday, police received a report in Penang about the status circulated on Facebook and WhatsApp that one of the victims in the amok incident was attacked by the perpetrator for insulting Prophet Muhammad.

“But police investigations have revealed that the suspect was suffering from mental illness and was influenced by watching violent videos from the Middle East," he told a press conference at the Bukit Aman police headquarters today.

Also present was Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador.

In the 4.45pm incident, a 25-year-old man went berserk and slashed two workers at the factory with a machete. The attack claimed the life of a 48-year-old woman and injured a 53-year-old man.

In self-defence, police shot dead the suspect at the scene.
