King: Chandran's death profound loss to nation

KUALA LUMPUR: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong AI-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah lbni Almarhum Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al- Musta’in Billah said the death of Malaysian football legend Datuk M. Chandran was a profound loss to the country.

In extending his condolences to Chandran’s family, Al-Sultan Abdullah said he was an inspiration to all Malaysians with his passion and dedication to football as Chandran had led the national team to qualify for the 1972 Munich Olympics.

“His role in the development of Malaysian football was legendary and both my late father (Paduka Ayahanda Sultan Pahang, Almarhum Sultan Ahmad Shah Al Musta’in Billah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Abu Bakar) and I have tremendous respect for our former captain.

“He was an unassuming man who let his work do the talking and his work ethic was admirable,” said Al-Sultan Abdullah in a statement issued by Istana Negara.

Chandran, who played for Malaysia in the 1960s and 1970s, died at the age of 77 at his residence in Ampang Jaya, Selangor, at 7.30am on Saturday. – Bernama
