Senior cops to attend NST-NIE workshop

JOHOR BARU: For the first time, 90 senior police officers from Johor will be participating in the New Straits Times' (NST) Newspaper-in-Education (NIE) workshop at the GBW Hotel (formerly known as Grand Blue Wave Hotel) this Oct 24.

The event is organised by the Johor English Language Teaching Association (Jelta) with GBW Hotel as the main sponsor.

Other sponsors include Oxford Fajar and University Book Store Malaysia. The NST is the official newspaper of the workshop.

The workshop will be conducted by Vincent D’Silva, an English language lecturer and NIE specialist who has conducted workshops for principals, teachers, parents and students for a number of years.

The workshop will be officiated by the NST group editor Rashid Yusof who will speak to the police officers on the importance of keeping abreast with the latest information on what’s happening not only in Malaysia but also in other parts of the world.

He will also share practical tips on reading holistically or selectively for gathering information.

Another speaker at the workshop is GBW Hotel general manager Chan Seng Chow. This is the sixth time the hotel is sponsoring a NST-NIE event.

Assistant Superintendent Mohd Md Shah, the commanding officer of the training and sports division of the Johor police contingent said the workshop would be attended by officers from the rank of Inspectors and above.

“It allows the officers to improve on their English language proficiency, learn how a newspaper organisation works and keep abreast with global events,” he said.

On Oct 23, Rashid will also be sharing the benefits of reading the NST to Form 5 and 6 students of SMK Infant Jesus Convent and SMK Dato’ Jaafar who will be sitting for their SPM and STPM examinations.
