Main road to Genting Highlands not affected by landslide

WEEKEND revellers who want to enjoy the attractions at the peak of Genting Highlands can go ahead as the main road to the internationally-renowned highlands resort was never affected by the landslide that struck a slip road located away from the resort on Tuesday.

In the 5.40pm incident, the earth movement that occurred after a non-stop downpour that began at 2pm, only affected a portion of the Jalan Genting-Amber Court slip road, and not the primary access road to the resort. No one was injured in the incident.

Today, Yusry Abdullah Sani, Genting Highlands Fire and Rescue station senior assistant chief, said that clearing up works on the Jalan Genting-Amber Court slip road is still being done. It is expected to be completed later tonight, weather permitting.

“An alternative route bypassing the affected stretch was identified and opened as early as 4pm yesterday for small and light vehicles,” he said.

The stretch of road affected by the landslide serves as the primary access to a hotel and serviced apartments.

He also said that the 200 guests who had been cut off and isolated in that hotel and serviced apartment were evacuated this morning.

“They were led to a safe area on foot, and in small groups. The last batch left the place at 4am this morning. The hotel management provided transportion to take them to a safe location,” he said.

Yusry added that there are still some “active” soil movement in the affected area and that his department was awaiting input from the relevant authorities with regard to slope management, and other safety concerns.

“We will monitor the situation and check for any soil movement, especially if precipitation is high in the coming days. If necessary, we will close the alternative route to ensure that public safety is not compromised.

“Having said that, I’d like to stress that Genting Highlands is safe as the area affected by the landslide is nowhere near the main road that leads to the resort."
