Call for Azmin to officiate congress does not represent party's youth wing

KUALA LUMPUR: The call by PKR Youth wing for party deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali to officiate its congress next month as per tradition does not represent the party's youth wing, said its chief Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir.

The call was reportedly made by his deputy Muhammad Hilman Idham following a meeting at Rumah Pemuda in Shah Alam last night.

Akmal said the purported meeting was not attended by the youth wing's top leadership and did not follow party procedure.

"It is not a problem for the youth wing (members) to meet anyone, but to refer to a gathering yesterday as an official meeting is not right because it was more like a get-together," he said when met in Parliament lobby today.

Akmal said the youth wing’s meeting should have been held at a the PKR headquarters as it was a formal event, adding that a notice had been issued for a PKR youth central leadership meeting this Sunday (Nov 24).

Asked if his deputy would attend the Sunday's meeting, Akmal said he hoped that Hilman would be present.

"I have no problem with him, just come to the meeting. We need to represent the interest of the party youth and not the interest of others.

"Maybe he is in a dilemma, being a special officer (to Azmin), but the party is bigger than anyone."

Akmal said PKR advisory council chairman Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail would be officiating the congress as announced previously.

Asked whether any action would be taken against Hilman, Akmal said anyone was free to bring the matter to the disciplinary board.

"I hope everyone will think about the interest of the party instead of their own personal ambitions. Focus on the party, as we are the government of the day.

"We can be critical of the party or the government, but we must also raise issues pertinent to the people. We cannot keep discrediting ourselves and trying to destroy what we have."
