Pahang villagers worry about debris collecting under bridge

JERANTUT: Villagers from Ulu Tembeling were shocked to find their village bridge was besieged with tree trunks and tree branches after flood waters subsided at Sungai Tembeling on Saturday evening.

Japrun Ali, a resident from Kampung Bantal, said the bridge was used to cross the river by villagers to go to Kampung Gusai.

The 50-year old said as the flood waters began to ease off, lots of dead wood and tree branches began collecting at the bridge, blocking water flow.

"Good thing no timber drifted into the river, it could have crushed the bridge.

"The woods stacking up against the bridge is very dangerous as the increased pressure could damage the bridge.

"Besides that, water column (kepala air) can occur if it is released simultaneously, the sudden rapid flow is a danger to the people near the river bank and those in boats," he said.

The bridge was constructed by a private company that is operating a farm in the village.

Japrun said owners of the company were currently clearing the bridge to ensure good water flow.

Photos of the scene were shared in social media last night with netizens sharing their concerns over the situation in Jerantut.
