Kelantan floods claim second victim

TUMPAT: Flooding in Kelantan has claimed its second victim. A 49-year-old labourer drowned at Kampung Jubakar here this morning.

Eh Phong Areang was catching fish in a flooded padi field and pulling the net when he slipped at about 8am.

District police chief Superintendent Abdul Rashid Mat Daud said villagers found Phong’s body at about 11.30am near the area where he was reported to have fallen.

He said the body was sent to Tumpat hospital for a post-mortem.

The first flood victim in the state was a seven-year-old boy who drowned in a canal. His body was found in a flooded padi field in Felcra Teratak Batu in Pasir Puteh.

Mohammad Ilham Hasmadi was reported to have followed his uncle to an irrigation canal around 6.30pm yesterday to fish when he slipped from a plank bridge and fell into the canal.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Hasanuddin Hassan said members of the search and rescue team found the boy’s body around 8am, about 400m from where he was believed to have slipped.
