GOF seizes 210 exotic birds in Rantau Panjang

KOTA BARU: The General Operations Force (GOF) seized 210 white-rumped shama

worth RM52,000 believed to have been smuggled from a neighbouring country.

The seizure was made near a mosque in the border town of Rantau Panjang.

In the 5pm operation, GOF Batallion 9 commanding officer Superintendent Nor Azizan Yusof said following a public tip-off, the team stopped a Proton Wira driven by a 55 year-old man at the area.

“Further checks the team found 21 baskets filled with 210 white-rumped shama on the rear passenger seat.

“The driver failed to furnish any documents on the transfer of the birds and we believe that they were smuggled in from Thailand via an illegal jetty.

"The suspect and the case have been handed over to the enforcement officers of the Kelantan Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan).

"The case is being investigated under Section 60 (1) (a) of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010," he said.
