Retrenched Media Prima staff urged to seek help from Socso

KUCHING: Media Prima Bhd (MPB) employees who are included in the group’s retrenchment exercise are encouraged to contact the Social Security Organisation (Socso) for coverage in the Employment Insurance Scheme.

Socso chief executive officer Datuk Seri Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed said apart from financial assistance, Socso also provided specialised assistance to deal with job losses.

“We provide specialised assistance to those who suffered job losses and help those who are looking for new jobs.

“This include those who have been affected by company downsizing, company closure or bankruptcy.

“The most affected in the recent years are the services, manufacturing and construction sectors,” he told a press conference after attending the Sarawak Socso Occupation Carnival at Mydin Vista Tunku, here, today.

The carnival which attracted 30 employers, offers 4,700 job opportunities at all levels, including for high school graduates, high school dropouts and those with disabilities.

As of noon today, a total of 140 job seekers were able to secure jobs, and an additional 117 have made it to the second round of interviews.

Azman said more than 28,000 workers have benefited from the claims paid out from the Employment Insurance Scheme. They were also able to find new jobs between August 2018 and November this year.

He also said a total of 37,269 people nationwide have suffered job lossess in the first 11 months of this year. In Sarawak, 1,751 people were identified as unemployed during the same period.
