Wild male elephant relocated to Belum Temenggor forest reserve

TANAH MERAH: A four-tonne wild male elephant, which was captured by the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) in Kampung Air Kayan here last Wednesday, was relocated to Belum Temenggor forest reserve today.

Kelantan Perhilitan director Ady Ermanty Haniff Mohamed Hanif said two decoy elephants - Abot and Rambai - from the National Elephant Conservation Centre (NECC) in Kuala Gandah, Pahang, were used in the operation.

He said the relocation exercise started at 8am today and was completed at 2pm.

“The elephant was believed to be from a herd of elephants which had destroyed crops in Kampung Air Kayan and its surrounding areas early this month," he said.

Ady said rangers from the department captured the male pachyderm at a rubber smallholding in Kampung Air Kayan on Dec 11.

He said the elephant was the eighth caught by the department since early this year.
