SK Putri, first Negri Sembilan school to set up own Al Quran disposal site

SEREMBAN: Al Quran or mushaf – a collection of pages or written copy from the Al Quran must be respected whether it is new or no longer in use.

In light of this and the need to educate the public on the importance of properly disposing the holy text, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Putri in Labu here has taken the initiative to set up its own Quran and mushaf disposal site in the school’s compound.

The initiative, which started in April last year, took three months to be completed, with the help of teachers, parents, Parents & Teachers Association (PTA) as well as other agencies.

Its headmistress, Siti Zaleha Othman said the idea to set up the disposal site came after the school took part in a briefing session with the state Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JHEAINS) on the proper ways to dispose Al Quran.

“From there, we thought it could be a good idea to set one at our own school to help lessen the burden of the department to handle the disposal of Al Quran or pages containing verses from the Holy book.

“Besides, the school’s text book and Islamic examination papers too include a lot of verses from the Al Quran and often we find it difficult to dispose them,” she said when met at the school here, today.

She said, the teachers, parents and SK Putri’s PTA rolled up their sleeves and decided to combine other innovation in executing the plan.

“We implement the eco-brick innovation where the bricks used to make the site are handmade using paddy husk. We had to wait for the bricks to dry completely for two weeks before the construction work could start,” she said.

She said, besides receiving financial contribution from teachers, parents, PTA amounting to RM2,000, the army too had stepped in to help with the construction of the site.

“We are so grateful to receive help from various parties especially parents from multiracial background.

The site was ready by July last year and used for the first time on the same month. So far the site had been used several times by the school and other parties who wished to use the facility,” she said adding that the public is also welcome to use the facility.

“The process of disposing papers containing verses from Quran is also taught to the pupils here and now they are able to handle the process with the supervision by the teachers.

"We hope this small effort will not only benefit the students here but also the public,” she said.
