Famous nasi kandar eatery among 3 premises ordered to close for 14 days

GEORGE TOWN: A famous nasi kandar outlet located at the heart of George Town’s World Heritage Site was given a 14-day closure notice due to cleanliness issue at the premises.

Another two mini markets at Litte India were also issued the same notice after the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) raided the premises between 8pm and 11pm yesterday.

MBPP environment health licensing officer M. Bawani said that her officers found rat and cockroach droppings in the premises.

"We also found rats at the time of our inspection, so we decided to issue the 14-day closure notice to the three premises until Jan 21," she said after the operation last night.

Bawani said that the action to temporarily shut down the premises was in line with MBPP’s bylaws under Section 38 (1) of the Food Establishment Act Bylaws 1991.

Another restaurant was issued compound on suspicion of food cross contamination issue.

The outlets issued with the shut down order must cease operations for at least three days to allow for cleaning works.

Subsequently, the MBPP will conduct follow-up inspection after being informed by the premise owners.

“Premises are given a rating based on the cleanliness. Those given C rating will be inspected, together with those that the public compain about.

"MBPP views the matter seriously and will continuously carry out similar operations," she said.
