GOF's Tiger Platoon stationed along the Kelantan-Thai border

PASIR MAS: The General Operations Force (GOF) is confident its special unit called `Tiger Platoon' can help curb smuggling activities along the Kelantan-Thai border.

GOF Seventh Batallion commanding officer Superintendent Azhari Nusi said the 43-men team would conduct their surveillance on foot along the border areas every day.

"We have set up the special unit to assist us in combating smuggling activities such as contraband, drugs, firearms and livestock.

"This team will patrol the border between 10km and 15km a day including isolated areas, along the river and also bushes to ensure our borders are safe from any unwanted elements.

"It is part of our efforts to put a stop to the activities that have been rampant lately," he told reporters at Post Pulau here today.

Azhari said the team was also ready to face any `outside threat' from certain individuals or those involved in the illegal activities.

"The team members have been equipped with weapons and they are told to conduct checks and take necessary action if they spot untoward movements along the border," he said.

Since the special team was set up, Azhari said the number of cross border activities had reduced slightly especially at the `hotspot' areas.

"Although there was slight drop in the figures, the team will continue monitoring the border," he said.
