Increase in influenza cases in Pahang, schools operate as usual

KUANTAN: 37 individuals including a teacher are down with influenza in Pahang today compared to only 10 pupils yesterday.

State Education Department director Datuk Dr Tajuddin Mohd Yunus said three pre-school students, 31 primary school pupils, two secondary school pupils and a primary school teacher have been tested positive with the influenza virus.

He said 13 students were treated at hospitals throughout the state while the remaining individuals including the teacher were being observed at home.

"To date, 14 cases were recorded in Kuantan, six in Pekan, five in Cameron Highlands, four in Bentong, three in Maran, two in Jerantut and one each in Rompin, Bera and Temerloh.

Pahang initially had 39 cases but two primary school students from Kuantan and Cameron Highlands have fully recovered.

"So far, no classes or schools have been closed. However, since there has been an increasing trend, we have ordered the respective schools to monitor their pupils' health progress," he said in a statement today.

It was reported yesterday that 10 primary school pupils were down with influenza compared to only two from Raub and Cameron Highlands respectively on Saturday.

It was previously reported that a one-year-old girl in Temerloh died last month after testing positive for H1N1 while her twin brother was warded at the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital (Hoshah) Intensive Care Unit and discharged on Jan 11.
