Family of crash victim may take legal action against intoxicated woman driver

KEPALA BATAS: The family of Muhammad Amin Najmi Azaman, 19, who was killed in an accident along with his friend after being hit by a car driven by a woman believed to have been under the influence of alcohol, is contemplating legal action against the driver.

In the 2.30am accident at Km13 of the Butterworth Outer Ring Road (BORR) heading towards Sungai Dua early today (Tuesday), Amin and his friend Muhamad Syaiful Hilmi Rosidi, both from the same kampung, were killed when a Toyota Vios rear-ended their motorcycle.

The car was driven by a 47-year-old health product spokesperson believed to be under the influence of alcohol.

Amin’s father Azaman Hashim, 49, said he would discuss the matter with Syaiful’s family on their decision.

He said justice needed to be served as accident cases due to drink driving continued to rise.

“I will take legal action because (for me) the law is still the law,” he said when met at the Kepala Batas Hospital.

“We want to make sure we do what needs to be done. Drink driving is happening more and more each day and the government should come up with effective measures to put a stop to it,” he said.

In the accident, the youths' motorcycle also caught fire as a result of the crash.

It was believed that the driver was heading to her mother’s house in Kepala Batas after a night out at a karaoke centre when the accident occurred.

Before the accident, Amin had met his parents for dinner which ended at 11pm.

Azaman, a factory worker, said he and wife Normasirah Mat Sidik, 47, were with Amin at their home at Paya Keladi Hujung here before he went out with Syaiful.

Amin was the couple’s second son and worked as a wiring contractor.

Amin and Syaiful will be buried at the Paya Keladi Muslim Cemetery.

Today’s accident involving drink driving is the second in Penang in just 72 hours.

On Sunday, a driver believed to be under the influence of alcohol rammed his Perodua Alza into the rear of a motorcycle, killing the rider and left the pillion seriously injured.
