Live updates: Collapse of PH government

KUALA LUMPUR: With the resignation of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as Prime Minister and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) chairman, the state of the country’s political scene is in turmoil.

No further announcements have been made following the resignations and all eyes are currently on Istana Negara as the matter now rests in the hands of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

DAP has condemned the action of some Pakatan Harapan leaders and members of parliament to form a backdoor government with a new Perikatan Nasional coalition.

Its secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said such political manipulation by the coalition, comprising Umno, Pas, MCA, MIC and "certain Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) leaders", with PKR renegades led by Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, had affected the government's efforts to address economic and livelihood of Malaysian businesses and the ordinary people.

"In objecting to this nefarious attempt to subvert and undermine the people's mandate given to PH, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had submitted his resignation as prime minister and Bersatu chairman," he told reporters after attending the party's emergency meeting at its headquarters today

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was seen leaving his residence at the Mines in a black Proton Perdana, clad in black, believed to be heading to Istana Negara a short while ago.

The FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI Index fell 42.78 points or 2.79 per cent to 1,488.22 after the news and unrest resulting from the abrupt resignation of Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and turmoil over his successor.

PAS deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man was seen leaving Menara Dato Onn where the Umno headquarters is situated.

3.30pm

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has left the Istana Negara.

Their entourage, consisting of black cars in which the DPM and the PKR president were believed to be in, left the palace gate at 3.15pm.

This was after having an audience with the Yang diPertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah for about 45 minutes. The details of the meeting has yet to be revealed until now.

2.40pm

Anwar arrives at Istana Negara at 2.30pm, followed by DPM Wan Azizah five minutes later.
