Contact tracing of Penang's first Covid-19 case completed

GEORGE TOWN: Authorities have identified the close contacts of the first positive case of Covid-19 in Penang, both at his workplace and his home, the Penang government said today.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the patient was a close contact to another positive case of Covid-19 in Kuala Lumpur.

He said the necessary examinations - physical and Covid-19 - would be conducted on all of the patient's close contacts by the Institute for Medical Research.

"Probe, sample testing, self quarantine and observation for Covid-19 on all the close contacts of the patient have been conducted.

"The state government views this matter very seriously, and will work closely with everyone in efforts to prevent the spread of the virus here," he said today.

The New Straits Times reported on Tuesday that Penang recorded its first Covid-19 case, when an employee of American data communications and telecommunications equipment provider Motorola Solutions, tested positive for the virus.

It was learnt that the employee had returned to work in the state with flu-like symptoms, after visiting Kuala Lumpur over a week ago.

Motorola Solutions director of communications (Asia Pacific and International Commercial Markets) Damien Batey confirmed the news in an email to the NST.

Yesterday, Chow assured that the situation in the state was under control despite the state reporting its first positive case of Covid-19.

Meanwhile, Chow also advised the people to abide by the guidelines set by the Health Ministry in the country's fight against the Covid-19 threat, which included postponing travels to Covid-19 epidemic areas in China (including Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau), South Korea, Japan, Italy and Iran.

"The people should also adopt the highest standard of personal hygiene at all times and put in place 'social distancing' of one-metre if they show any symptoms or come aross those who had symptoms of Covid-19.

"Those who have been to the epidemic areas, should declare doing so upon their return, and to seek necessary treatment," he added.
