Tabligh gathering participants told to cooperate with health authorities

KUALA LUMPUR: All participants of the recent Sri Petaling Tabligh religious gathering have been advised to cooperate with health authorities.

Its committee member Abdullah Cheong said in a statement that those involved in the gathering, which became a cluster of Covid-19 infections, should contact their local health authorities for guidance and treatment as soon as possible.

"Abide (by the instructions) and take full responsibility by giving your cooperation to the authorities to allay concerns, tension and any misconceptions by any quarters, be it the general public or the authorities.

“All activities that could lead to the spread of the virus must be stopped immediately.

"During the quarantine period at Sri Petaling Mosque, no one was allowed to enter.

“We hope all these measures will be followed and executed to the best of everyone's ability," Abdullah said.

It was reported that about 16,000 people had attended the gathering, of which 14,500 were Malaysians.

On Mar 14, a total of 4,942 participants were identified and 3,069 were tested with 137 of them being referred to hospitals.

The gathering at the mosque brought together missionaries from across the country but the gathering became a Covid-19 cluster of infection.

This then caused concern among the people as the participants returned to their respective hometowns which could lead to them spreading the virus across the country.

Yesterday, Malaysia recorded the highest single-day increase of Covid-19 cases, at 190, bringing the total to 428 cases, the highest in Southeast Asia presently.
