Health personnel 'camp' three days on Pulau Gaya to contain Covid-19

KOTA KINABALU: The state’s healthcare personnel had spent three days on Pulau Gaya here to conduct prevention of and control Covid-19 infection among the islanders.

Sabah Health department (JKNS) director Datuk Dr Christina Rundi said the activity was conducted by the Kota Kinabalu Health Office from March 28 until yesterday.

“About 65.6 per cent of the villagers have been inspected and 1,600 samples were taken.

“JKNS would also like to extend appreciation to the support and cooperation given by the National Security Council, police, army and the people’s volunteer corps (RELA) throughout the operation,” she said in a statement.

However, she did not elaborate on the findings of those samples taken from the island, which is about a 30-minute boat ride from the city.

As of yesterday, the state recorded four new cases, bringing the total of Covid-19 cases there to 201.

While 809 are placed at 23 quarantine centres, 6,538 are ordered to do self-quarantine at home.

“There are still 5,567 close contacts under the surveillance by JKNS, while 971 had passed the 14-day quarantine period,” she said.

During a joint operation, JKNS’s Inspectorate and Legislation unit together with police, local authorities and RELA personnel had inspected 309 premises, and ordered three water dispensing machines in Sandakan to be closed.

Meanwhile, Rundi, on behalf of the Health Ministry, thanked the Sabah government for the RM1 million contributions for frontliners, as well as donations of personal protective equipment and medical supplies from non-governmental organisations and individuals.
