CMCO: Police will decide whether to reduce or maintain number of roadblocks

KUALA LUMPUR: It is up to the police to decide whether to reduce or maintain the number of roadblocks in place nationwide when the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) begins on Monday.

Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said since the Movement Control Order (MCO) will be relaxed, more focus should be placed on ensuring compliance with the CMCO's standard operating procedures (SOPs).

"It is crucial to ensure full compliance with the SOPs issued by the National Security Council (NSC).

"For example, on social distancing, perhaps there is a need for the police to monitor (the situation) to ensure full adherence during this phase.

"Therefore, it is up to the police whether to reduce the number of roadblocks or to remain as is," he told a daily press conference today.

Ismail Sabri said he was also informed that the People's Volunteer Corps (Rela) will be mobilised to monitor adherence to the NSC's SOPs.

Earlier, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador is reported to have said that the police will be reducing the number of roadblocks beginning on Monday.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced that most economic sectors will be allowed to resume operations on Monday, with conditions.

He also announced that certain social activities will also be allowed, except for mass gatherings.

The MCO was first imposed on March 18 to stem the outbreak of Covid-19, and the country is currently in its fourth phase of the order, which ends on May 12.
