KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia registered 16 new Covid-19 cases as of noon today, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 8,572.
Out of the 16 new cases, three were imported cases involving two Malaysians and a permanent resident, who were infected abroad.
Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said, of the local transmission cases, nine were foreigners and four were Malaysians.
"Of the local transmission cases involving Malaysians, two cases had close contact with case 8,535, who was part of the Kidurong cluster in Sarawak.
"One case was gleaned from a pre-surgery screening in Johor, while another case was a detainee who was recently jailed in Melaka," he said in a statement today.
Dr Noor Hisham said of the nine foreigners, six cases were from Negri Sembilan, two from Selangor and the remaining one from Sabah.
"The two cases in Selangor had close contact with case 8,513 who is under the cleaning company cluster. The six from Negri Sembilan are part of the Pedas cluster while the remaining case in Sabah involved a person from the Tawau temporary detention centre who was screened before being deported to Indonesia."
He said the ministry also recorded 10 recovered cases, who were discharged from hospital as of noon today.
The cumulative recovered cases now stands at 8,156 or 95.1 per cent of total cases.
No new fatalities related to Covid-19 were reported today, with the death toll remaining at 121 cases or 1.41 per cent of Covid-19 cases.
He said that to date, three patients are being treated in the intensive care unit. None of the cases, he said, needed ventilator support.
On a separate matter, Dr Noor Hisham noted that public awareness with regards to sharing fake news has improved considerably.
He said as of June 20, statistics from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) showed that police have not opened a new investigation paper related to Covid-19 fake news for the past three weeks.
