55 people nabbed for defying SOPs, 11 under remand [NSTTV]

PUTRAJAYA: Fifty-five people were nabbed and issued compounds by the police for violating the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) yesterday.

Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said of the total, 11 were being remanded and 44 others issued compounds for various offences.

Among the offences were indulging in karaoke session or activities at family entertainment centres (12), reflexology or massage (six), attending activities which hindered social distancing (29) and activities which were against the SOPs.

"The task force on SOP led by police has conducted a total of 61,262 inspections yesterday," said the senior defence minister at a press conference.

A total of 2,580 compliance task forces had made checks nationwide involving a total of 13,166 personnel, he said.

Checks were conducted at 3,896 supermarkets, 5,574 restaurants, 1,068 stalls, 972 factories and 1,625 public market and Pasar Tani.

Also checked were 4,087 places of worship and 1,632 recreational areas.

On the Op Benteng, Ismail Sabri said police had mounted 66 roadblocks and inspected 42,955 vehicles nationwide in a bid to prevent illegal immigrants entering the country especially at rat lanes, or illegal routes.

"Three foreigners have been arrested in the operation for immigration offences.

"The government will take action against those who attempted to enter the country illegally and will not compromise those who are in cahoots with people bringing in illegal immigrants into the country."

A total of 1,157 illegal immigrants and 211 tekong (boat captains) have been arrested between May 1 and yesterday (June 30) for attempting to cross the country borders, especially via the rat lanes.

"Authorities have also nabbed 76 people suspected to be smugglers and seized 36 vessels."

Op Benteng involves the Armed Forces, police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the Malaysian Border Security Agency (AKSEM), who joined forces to ensure that the country's borders are safeguarded; and to eliminate cross-border crimes and prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Ismail Sabri said a total of 9,067 sanitisation operations were conducted nationwide under the supervision of the Housing and Local Government Ministry since March 30, covering 134 zones.

"Yesterday (June 30), 28 sanitisation operations were conducted. They covered 23 zones in eight states, among others, Sabah (10 operations), Sarawak (four), Melaka and Terengganu (three)."
