Guard assault on video: Cops ask victim to come forward

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have urged the Nepalese guard who was seen assaulted at a condominium parking lot in a 44-second video which went viral on Friday, to come forward and facilitate police investigation.

Wangsa Maju district police chief Superintendent Rajab Ahad Ismail said police have identified the suspected assailant. However, the identity of the victim remains unknown for now.

"We have identified the suspect and expect to make an arrest in due time. Police are now trying to identify and locate the foreigner who was beaten in the video recording," he said.

The video shows a uniformed security guard being punched, repeatedly slapped and hit with a baton on his legs, back and his arm.

The suspect is heard speaking in Bahasa Malaysia: "You think you're very big? Did you come here to cause trouble or did you come here to work?".

Rajab urged the victim to come forward as he is needed to facilitate the investigation.

"The case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code. We have already opened an investigation paper on the assault," he said.

Two police reports have since been lodged over the incident by the Security Industry Association of Malaysia (PIKM) and the Nepal Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

The video has renewed fresh discussions over the treatment of foreign workers in certain sectors in Malaysia, with activists calling for punishment to be meted out on those who abuse the foreign workforce.

The clip also triggered outrage on social media, with users calling for the assailant to be brought to book.

On Friday, PIKM president Datuk Seri Ramli Yusuff expressed his shock over the incident and said the association would assist the police in their investigation, if needed.

Ramli had also urged the authorities to provide their full focus on the case.
