PM expresses condolences to Lebanon over massive blast

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has expressed condolences to the people of Lebanon following a massive blast at a port in Beirut this morning, which has so far killed 70 people.

In a Facebook post, the premier said; "Our condolences (from the government and Malaysians) to the families of victims killed and injured in the incident.

"May they be granted patience and strength in facing this test."

He said Malaysia was ready to extend assistance to Lebanon.

In his post, Muhyiddin also said all Malaysians in Beirut were reportedly safe.

Around midnight Malaysian time Tuesday, Beirut witnessed a fire followed by a massive blast at a warehouse at its port, where explosive material was believed to have been stored.

The blast triggered widespread destruction across the city and left at least 70 people dead and more than 3,000 injured.

Lebanon president Michel Aoun has declared a three-day mourning period, while Lebanon's Supreme Defence Council has declared a state of emergency for two weeks in the capital.
